ABSTRACT
The article reports that a failed bank bailout has given the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) an opportunity to play the stock market. The FDIC took up New York Community Bancorp Inc. on an offer of profit if its shares rose after its purchase of the failed AmTrust Bank. New York Community paid the FDIC $23.3 million for AmTrust. Such agreements could help the FDIC mitigate the cost of resolving failures.
