ABSTRACT
Psychological stress is one of the biggest problems of the present-day "civilized society". We looked for the effect of stress on granulocytes function. As stress models, 11 healthy (health care) college students during exam period and 15 anxious patients suffering from chronic tensional headache were employed. Four granulocyte surface activation markers: L-selectin, αMβ2 integrin, CD15s and lactoferrin were analysed by flow cytometry, using indirect immunofluorescence labelling. Our study indicates that: a) stress response is probably associated with granulocyte activation and b) relaxed state may facilitate reduction of "excitedness" of these cells; c) some granulocyte activation markers (especially cell surface lactoferrin and ICAM-1) might be used as stress indicator.
