ABSTRACT
We performed calorimetric measurements of the enthalpy of formation of amorphous alloys created using vapor quenching in a highly immiscible system, Ag-Ni. The low-enthalpy states observed, as compared with extrapolated liquids and crystalline solid solutions, are in agreement with the findings from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD results support the proposition that the enthalpy reduction is associated with the ultra-fine-scale phase separation in the liquid/amorphous state. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

The partial enthalpies of mixing of the constituent components (Δ $$\bar H_i$$) have been determined by high-temperature calorimetry and then used to evaluate the integral enthalpies of mixing (Δ H) of Ga-Si-Mn alloys along three cuts at 1770 ± 5 K. The results demonstrate that, in...

Partial and integral enthalpies of mixing of liquid Ag-Ni and Ag-Ni-Sn alloys were determined at different temperatures, i.e., at 1500 °C for binary Ag-Ni alloys and at 1000, 1220, and 1400 °C for ternary Ag-Ni-Sn alloys. Two different Calvet-type micro-calorimeters were used for the...
