ABSTRACT
The article reports on the risk of nominal devaluation of the Latvian lats due to the government proposals for new mortgage rules. It states that the said proposal would force a contraction of the banking sector's balance sheet and deplete the industry's capital base. In addition, the said proposals eradicate the pervasive currency mismatch between asset and liabilities and would offer scope for the government to devalue the lat.
