ABSTRACT
Introduces the recollections of Barbara Dick, a member of a Mennonite family that was caught in the Franco-German crossfire in Geisberg, Alsace, in 1870. The recollections are a useful source not only for information about the war, but for insights into the thinking and customs of the Alsace Mennonites at this time. The account describes the preparations for the conflict, which included hiding valuables in the local castle, being holed up there with French soldiers before the room was taken by the Prussians, and an account of the situation after the battle.
