The article discusses research on the incidence of iatrogenic retinal breaks after 25-gauge surgery. It references a study published in the 2008 issue of the "American Journal of Ophthalmology." The researchers found that retinal breaks occurred in 15.8 percent of operations in a cohort of 177 consecutive operations in 171 patients who were undergoing 25-gauge vitrectomy for idiopathic macular hole.
