ABSTRACT
The article discusses how old recipes offer clues about a region's culture and people. It notes that recipes from the Appalachian region in Kentucky during the Great Depression include small game that point to the use of hunting to obtain food and control garden pests. Canned elderberries and picked walnuts were picked in the fall and preserved for eating in winter. Furthermore, scrapbooks of type-written recipes were compiled by pack horse librarians to preserve memory and local culture.
