ABSTRACT

This article reviews Lin Tien-wai’s book on source materials for historians of local and regional Chinese history, focusing generally but not exclusively on southeastern China. The chronological scope extends from the Tang dynasty to the present, with much attention given to the Song dynasty, the author’s area of expertise. The reviewer notes that Lin finds new methods and presents fresh ideas on finding sources on local histories, genealogies, clan lineage documents, regional chronicles, local gazetteers, and monumental inscriptions.
