ABSTRACT
This article discusses the cohesion and disunity in the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) observed during the 1965 Eight World Congress in Amsterdam, Netherlands. For an international trade union federations to be cohesive it is necessary that there is a consensus among the principal affiliates on objectives, policies and methods of operation. The presence of rival delegations from Tunisia, the allocation of ICFTU Executive Board seats between the U.S. and Canada and the press conference of union leader George Meany are the incidents that provoked public controversy in Amsterdam.
