ABSTRACT
This article investigates the impact of the introduction of collective bargaining on collegial decision-making processes within a university. Specifically, it analyzes the first five-year period (1970–75) of experience at Rutgers University under an AAUP collective bargaining agreement. On the basis of interviews, case analysis, and other evidence, the author concludes that the postbargaining faculty grievance process has provided improved due process over the prebargaining complaint system and has done so without a substantial negative impact on collegial processes and relationships within the university.
