ABSTRACT
The article discusses a study performed by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) about the use of categorical exclusions for oil and gas development under the section 930 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 by the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The study found that categorical exclusions were used by BLM to approve about 6,100 of 22,000 applications for drilling permits and about 800 other actions. Information on how GAO conducted the study is offered.
