ABSTRACT
The article explains how consumers should read food labels bearing such claims as "trans-fat-free" and "low-fat." It discusses the role of fat in body repair and growth, and promotion of normal cell function. It describes the capacity of unsaturated fats to lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. The bad effects of saturated fats and trans fats, and the proper way of reading the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels are also discussed.
