ABSTRACT
The article presents an Iowa public-safety answering point (PSAP) as the first PSAP capable of receiving text messages directly into the 911 system. It cites Intrado as Black Hawk Consolidated Public Safety Communications Center's vendor that offers text messages to be transmitted and received within the 911 network. It mentions Intrado's efforts to boost the existing short message service (SMS) service by giving the caller's location information with the text and allowing pictures to be included with voice and text calls to PSAP.
