ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decline in leveraged buyout (LBO) deals in the U.S. in 2008. According to Ernst & Young, the slowdown in transactions contributed to just 314 announced private equity deals through May 2009. It presents remarks of private equity leader Greg Slager on the issue. It relates the deals involving Apax Partners, which agreed to acquire Bankrate Inc., and Sequoia Capital, which agreed to sell Zappos.com to Amazon.com. It notes that debt exchanges by portfolio companies is one area that experienced a spate of activity in 2008-2009.
