The Mercedes W196 was the first to use technology such as Desmodromic valve actuation and fuel injection, developed by Mercedes engineers. Michael Schumacher driving the Ferrari F2002 broke the Fiorano lap record by more than a second. The F2002 became the fourth new Ferrari in a row to win on its debut.
