ABSTRACT
The article profiles Gustav Schonfeld, a doctor of medicine who survived the Holocaust in Auschwitz, and explains how his experiences influenced his life and his career. He chose to go into medicine since his father was a physician and his experience in Auschwitz made him appreciate the humaneness of helping people. He says that his Holocaust experience made him realize that people are capable of doing immense harm on others. He does not believe in giving government total control over its citizens since it leads to abuse.
