ABSTRACT
This article looks at alternatives to overhead wires for powering trams. It identifies superconductors, energy storage and innovative power supply systems among the alternatives. It discusses the selection of 10:1 ratio between the usable energy content from the battery and supercapacitors by Siemens. In addition, the article explores the emergence of technologies that combine useful energy savings with the possibility of traveling for relatively short distances.
