ABSTRACT
This paper presents a conceptual approach for the study of the media-audience relation from a structural perspective but with emphasis on reception analysis. For this purpose it examines the advances in three systems of interpretation that have a substantial anchorage in the structuration theory of Anthony Giddens: Klaus Bruhn from the perspective of pragmatism and Peircean semiotics, John B. Thompson from the perspective of social theory and the interpretive framework of depth hermeneutics, and Guillermo Orozco from cultural mediations, communication and education. These three authors have re-established some theoretical-methodological certainties in relation to communication studies. This requires discussing theoretical sources, traditions and articulation in order to focus on the key concepts and thus identify what remains hazy in these theories and how they approach the study of the relation of subjects with the media.
