The article focuses on review of study on the effect of blood pressure (BP) lowering treatments on cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in patients receiving maintenance dialysis. Meta-analysis of the data collected showed that BP-lowering treatments reduced all-cause mortality, CV mortality, and CV events compared with placebo or usual treatment.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of L-carnitine compared with placebo or control on morbidity and mortality in the setting of acute myocardial infarction. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 controlled trials (N=3629) was conducted to determine the effects of L-carnitine vs...

Background: Haemodialysis results in a left ventricular hypertrophic response. It is unclear whether tight blood pressure control or particular medications might attenuate this response. We sought to determine, in a pre-dialysis cohort on atenolol, whether Losartan might attenuate left...

OBJECTIVE-- Stress hyperglycemia increases the risk of mortality and poor outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to assess effects of intravenous nicorandil administered before reperfusion on AMI patients with stress hyperglycemia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS --...

  • Effect of peptides derived from food proteins on blood pressure: a metaanalysis of randomized controlled trials. Pripp, Are Hugo // Food & Nutrition Research;2008, Vol. 52, p1

Background: In clinical trials, peptides derived from food proteins have shown an effect on blood pressure. This biological mechanism is mainly due to inhibition of angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE), thereby regulating blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin system. A meta-analysis of...

The article presents a review and meta-analysis of trials investigating the effect of garlic preparations on blood pressure. According to the authors, their meta-analysis suggests that garlic supplements exert a hypotensive effect compared with placebo, particularly in subjects with high blood...
