An introduction to the journal is presented in which the editor discusses general lectures presented at the Symposium on Trends in Applications of Mathematics to Mechanics which took place in Levico, Italy, from September 22-25, 2008, including component interaction in fluid mixtures, phase-field models, and magnetization dynamics.
