Demonstrates the formation of submicron-period gratings in polyethylene terephthalate and polyimide films using a krypton fluoride laser irradiated phase mask. Dominance of d-spaced gratings on the ablated polymers; Average fluence behind the mask; Distribution of the local energy density.
