Presents the transverse effects in a Nd:YVO[sub 4] microchip solid-state laser due to gain-guiding. Role of transverse modulation of the gain profile and detuning in controlling spatial and spectral properties; Function of the pump beam dimension; Use of the Maxwell-Bloch equations to interpret laser behavior.
