ABSTRACT
The article reports on the tension between Belgium's Dutch and French speakers which was stimulated by the upcoming European Parliament elections in June 2009. It notes that one French-speaking party considers politicians' refusal to allow space for Francophone parties to show their campaign literature in two Dutch-speaking cities as an assault to French speakers' fundamental rights. It also discusses how the tensions over language rights in Belgium caused political paralysis in the country.
