Examines the columnar defects in YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-delta] single crystals irradiated with different high energy heavy ions. Observation of aligned tracks for tin and gold projectiles; Formation of spherical damage regions upon irradiation with 1.4 gigaelectron volt; Use of flux-melt method to grow the thin flake single crystals.
