ABSTRACT
The article reports on the strong measures taken by hospitals to cope with financial losses because of the economic recession in the U.S. A March 2009 survey conducted by the Healthcare Financial Management Association indicated that hospital financial executives reported negative margins from June to December 2008. Respondents took measures which include the reduction of capital spending and creation of budget contingency plans. Another American Hospital Association survey noted that financial stresses were not better in the first quarter of 2009 and nearly half of the respondents cut staff and 22% reduced services, including post-acute care and patient education.
