ABSTRACT
The article presents a research which examines several toothbrushes, which are available in Europe, through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to test whether they have optimal rounding of bristle ends. Goal of the research, as stated, were two including, providing dental practitioners with orientation and information, and provide quality norms for which the manufacturers should aim. Majority of bristle shafts, as reported, exhibited smooth surfaces or only fine irregularities, which were usually near the ends of the bristles which had been mechanically altered during manufacturing. The research concludes that, the SEM investigation shows that optimal rounding of bristle ends cannot be assumed even in toothbrushes which are advertized as promoting oral health and preventing disease.
