ABSTRACT
The article presents a profile of labor leader John L. Lewis, who was a coal miner. Lewis' education and his employment as a coal miner are discussed as is his association with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in Chariton, Iowa. Lewis and his family relocated to Panama, Illinois. His abilities as a public speaker helped him to gain prominence in the UMWA. Lewis was president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) but resigned due to political issues.
