A Taiwan-born U.S. citizen, who became among the youngest fully tenured professors at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Ying returned in late 2002 to Singapore and was named as one of the '100 Engineers of the Modern Era' by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
