ABSTRACT
The relationship between popular political publications and politics in early modern history has since long been described in terms of top-down propaganda. The sources tell a different story. Besides governmental propaganda there also existed propaganda by citizens aimed at politicians. This article suggests, by exploring in detail hundreds of pamphlets that were published in the Dutch Republic during periods of political upheaval in 1672, that the people who participated in popular political culture, by reading and writing pamphlets, but also by participating in riots, and even murder, were not that easily influenced and had motivations and argumentations of their own.
