ABSTRACT
The article reports on the financial performance of the steel industry and trade in the U.S. for the first quarter of 2009. Steel prices continue to decline, where the price for hot-rolled coil had dropped from $430 to $440 a ton. Leading industry companies, including Nucor Corp., Steel Dynamics Inc., and AK Steel Corp. have reported a net loss from $73.4 million to $189.6 million. The steel shipments to service centers also declined significantly by about 55%.
