The article discusses early modern dance and the lack of records for steps and patterns in Stuart masques. According to the author, at a masque performance the vast majority of time is occupied with dancing but the choreographies which includes the steps and patterns do not appear in the printed or manuscript masque texts. The most obvious reason for the dearth of records for steps and patterns is that no easy form of choreographic notation was available especially for group dances with up to twelve participants.
