This article reports on an independent safety assessment commissioned by National Grid's metering arm following the discovery of a serious safety problem that can affect thousands of meters and the properties where they are installed. One of the problems identified with the Elster Jeavons J42 regulators, which have been fitted to meters, is its susceptibility to cross-threading. In an effort to determine potentially faulty units, National Grid engineers made several visits.
