ABSTRACT
This article highlights the conference British Trade Unionism, Workers' Struggles and Economic Performance, 1940-1979, which took place in September 1997. One of the conference's sponsors was the Society for the Study of Labour History. It was inspired by the conviction that the end of the century and the impending conclusion of a long period of state hostility to trade unionism provided a suitable opportunity for historians to begin to take stock of the period from the Second World War to 1979. These years constitute the zenith of trade unionism in Britain; they have been followed by a decline both in trade unionism itself and in its study. There were three plenary sessions. Geoffrey Goodman engaged Len Murray and Jack Jones in a vigorous conversation which re-tilled well-trodden ground but unfortunately did not reach 1979 and the winter of discontent. A paper by Bert Hogankamp on trade unions and film, which uncovered and analyzed a surprising variety of efforts in this neglected field, led on to a lively audience discussion of unions and the media, stimulated by a panel of Geoffrey Goodman, Robert Taylor and Regan Scott
