ABSTRACT
The article reports on the eagerness of Nevada legislators and Governor Jim Gibbons to receive more than $1.3 billion in federal grants from the economic stimulus package as the state faces a $2.3 billion budget shortfall. As part of a compromise in the U.S. Senate, Nevada's estimated share of more than $500,000 in fiscal stabilization money has been cut in half. Senator Randolph Townsend stresses the need for the state to restore funding and increase taxes.
