ABSTRACT
In this study, sociolinguistics, which is considered as a sub-branch of linguistics in term of its use has been carried out. Therefore, in the study, firstly the term sociolinguistics, has been identified and the standard language which is thought to have a significant place in sociolinguistics has been explained. At the next stage of the research, it is claimed that the term sociolinguistic competence has to be developed among the foreign language learners in order to use the language successfully. Finally, for the students to use the language effectively and appropriately, it has been explained that sociolinguistics and sociolinguistic competence have contributions to the foreign language teaching.
