ABSTRACT
The article discusses the terminology of two-dimensional patterns in decorative arts or surface design. It states that the problem with patterns begins with nomenclature, as man has lost the ability to discuss patterns unlike men of the 19th century. It informs that some original Chinese patterns came to be called as Islamic after they traveled via the silk route and this raised the question as to when does an influence become a tradition. It states that aesthetics or design movements cannot be easily defined.
