HCA's Next Leaders Are in the Pipeline

The article presents information on the Chief Operating Officer (COO) Development Program, established by Nashville, Tennessee-based HCA Inc., to search for next-generation leaders. The firm is a system of 163 hospitals and 120 outpatient centers in the U.S. and England. According to Lee Nelson, director of the program, they created the structured development program because they were anticipating retirements in the future. The program, since its inception in 2001, have recruited 60 COO for the company's hospitals.
