ABSTRACT
The article emphasizes that the protection of women's rights from the context of Pan-Africanism may act as a catalyst for positive environmental change in Sub-Saharan Africa. The potential benefits of increasing women's participation in communities as an environmental protection strategy is explored. It is argued that the inclusion of rural women in the creation of a Pan-African system of environmental rights protection is crucial to its success. The impact of colonial and post-colonial history of the region on environmental degradation is tackled.
