ABSTRACT
The article reports on a paper by Stanford University professors Stefan Nagel and Ulrike Malmendier, which argues that economic conditions experienced in youth have a lasting impact on investment patterns. Anecdotal evidence for such behavior is commonly associated with people who remember the Great Depression. Nagel and Malmendier examined 40 years of data from the federal Survey of Consumer Finances to find quantitative evidence.
