ABSTRACT
The article reminiscences the feat of U.S. Navy Lieutenant Andrew Sterrett who took command of the schooner Enterprise as part of the Mediterranean squadron in 1801. Encountering the 14-gun corsair Tripoli, commanded by Rais Mahomet Rous, he began a running gun battle that lasted nearly three hours which eventually ended in victory to Sterrett. Though it was a minor victory, it came at a formative time when the fledgling U.S. Navy was just emerging onto the world stage.
