ABSTRACT
Coeliac disease occurs at rates approaching 1% of the population, and is one of the most common genetically determined gastrointestinal diseases. Because coeliac disease has emerged as a public health problem, its prevention is of great importance. This article reviews data concerning the possible strategies for prevention of coeliac disease, including breastfeeding, amount of gluten and the infant's age at the time of gluten introduction, as well as the role of gastrointestinal infections. In addition, it briefly presents the outline of the multicenter European project PREVENTCD (www.preventcd.com) financed by the European Union FP6, which aims to investigate the possibility of induction of tolerance for gluten in genetic predisposed children for coeliac disease.
