ABSTRACT
THERE IS LITTLE PUBLISHED ON THE composition of liquid effluent discharged from medical institutions and their possible environmental impact. We analysed the chemical and radioactive composition of liquid discharges from three medical institutions in Cape Town. A continuous sampler was installed at two hospitals and a medical school to record their outflows in terms of chemical oxygen demand, pH, nitrates, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead, zinc and iron. Results were compared with a similar study undertaken in Germany. The institutions studied discharge a considerable amount of chemicals into the sewerage system. These compounds are ultimately deposited on land as sludge, or flow into local rivers and the sea, with potential negative effects on human, animal and environmental health.
