March 2009
New York Times Upfront;3/16/2009, Vol. 141 Issue 11, p22
The article presents a debate on the issue of whether U.S. colleges should lift their bans on Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). Austin Byrd, a junior student at Columbia University, thinks banning ROTC from campuses discourages the most talented young people from serving in the military at a time when the country is fighting two wars and should do the opposite. For sophomore student Laura Torre, those students who oppose letting ROTC return to schools like Columbia is not about opposition to war or the military, but fundamental fairness.
