The International Manganese Institute describes manganese as the world's twelfth-most-abundant element in the Earth's crust, but the fourth most used in tonnage. Global low-grade ore reserves are estimated to be at several billion tonnes, while high-grade material, defined as having a manganese content above 44%, is estimated to be around 580 million tonnes.
