The article focuses on the films of African American motion picture director and actor Tyler Perry. Perry's films, including his latest release "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," are enormously popular with African American audiences, but are also controversial in that community. Some African Americans argue that Perry's films use degrading stereotypes of African Americans, especially African American women. Perry responds that his purpose is simply to make people laugh
