ABSTRACT
The article discusses the relationship between opioids and respiratory depression. According to a report released by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), aggressive treatment of pain by intravenous or neuraxial opioids might be linked with respiratory depression. Updated practice guidelines from the ASA include new survey data recommendations referring to monitoring for respiratory depression. Moreover, specific treatment recommendations for respiratory depression are also presented.
