ABSTRACT
The article reports a 14 percent growth in worldwide shipments of cell phones year-over-year in the first quarter of 2008, according to a report from Strategy Analytics. The growth rate was higher than at any time in 2007 and was due in large part to surging demand in Asia, Africa and the rest of the emerging world. Roughly 282 million cell phones were shipped during the quarter compared to 247.2 million in the same quarter in 2007. The big winners were South Korean handset vendors LG and Samsung.
