The article presents information on the economic recession facing heath care information technology (IT) in the U.S. Expects say that the U.S. government is debating a stimulus bill that includes $20 billion for health IT, and in the throes of the current recession, health care could become the tech industry's recession-era gold rush. Two of the biggest obstacles faced by tech vendors who market health IT products and services have long been the industry's dogged determination to remain in the paper-and-pencil era and the fractured nature of the market. Hospitals or small groups of hospitals have established incompatible IT networks, so the industry has been denied the benefits of a national health network where patients' records are readily available.
