ABSTRACT
The article presents research on the pigment produced by Bacteroides (B) melaninogenicus. The black pigment produced by this oral microorganism has been identified as extracellular melanin, intracellular hemin, extracellular colloidal ferrous sulfide, and as an intracellular derivative of hemoglobin. According to the results, in an enriched blood agar medium, B melaninogenicus produced a black pigment that seems to be a heminlike hemoglobal derivative.
