The article describes the explosive properties of ammonium nitrate. The chemical compound is characterized as a white powder at room temperature and standard pressure. It is used as a high-nitrogen fertilizer and as an oxidizing agent in explosives. It makes an explosive mixture when combined with a hydrocarbon like diesel fuel, or sometimes kerosene or coal dust. A mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil have been used for bombs in terrorist acts. When heated, it decomposes into gas but it can be induced to decompose explosively by detonation.
